A New Name, A New Mission
Twin Cities Community Development Corporation announced its name change, to NewVue Communities, as it expands its mission to serve the entire region.
The community development and affordable housing organization celebrated its 35th annual meeting Tuesday night (Nov. 10) at the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster, where it unveiled its new name and expanded service territory—which now includes Gardner, along with 19 adjoining communities.
“Our new name and expanded mission represents a regional approach to developing quality housing, creating economic opportunities, and fostering civic engagement in North Central Massachusetts,” said Marc Dohan, executive director of NewVue Communities.
According to Dohan, a regional approach makes more sense than serving just Fitchburg and Leominster, since the region is inextricably united through housing, economic development and civic participation.
“We felt that the time was right to take our model, which has worked very well in Fitchburg and Leominster, and apply it to the region,” said Dohan. “You have so many residents that live in one of our rural communities but work in one of the three cities, so the economic and housing health of one community can have a direct impact on other communities.”
Current projects include plans for creating housing in the former Carter Junior High School in Leominster and B.F. Brown Middle School in Fitchburg. The organization is also a partner in Fitchburg’s Re-Imagine North of Main initiative, designed to improve the quality of life for current and future residents living in the neighborhood.
"Building Foundations for Powerful Communities"
NewVue Communities is a membership organization led by the diverse resident and business communities of Fitchburg and Leominster. We invest in and organize the residents of these cities to help build assets such as quality housing, good jobs, strong businesses and effective leaders. We envision healthy neighborhoods where residents choose to live, work, and invest, thereby forming a powerful, unified community.
Our current focus in Fitchburg is the Elm Street Area Neighborhood north of Main Street. Our plan combines the efforts of many NewVue departments -- Community Organizing, Small Business, Housing Development, and Homeownership - to generate a renewed sense of pride and ownership in the neighborhood, in the downtown business district, and in Fitchburg. In addition to extensive housing construction and rehabilitation in the neighborhood, the plan includes the recent conversion of 470 Main Street from a mostly-vacant bank building into a multi-use building including 31 units of quality, affordable housing, Homeownership and Small Business Assistance Centers, and our current offices.
In Leominster, we have just completed construction on 40 units of LEED-certified, quality, affordable housing. The building provides community meeting space and CDC offices and is an anchor in the City of Leominster's redevelopment of the historic Comb & Carriage District.
